My friend Ben says:

Your transit piece made me think of this recent piece in the New Yorker about extreme commuting.

The interesting thing about travel choice is that people often choose modes that lower their overall quality of life (increased social isloation, less time with family) in favor of a couple of seemingly paramount benefits - low cost house with big yard. In my thinking people should be called upon to be selfish here. Its to their own benefit to take transit, its to thier own benefit to increase thier sales tax contributions to the rta by .025%. But all to often its hard as hell to do what we know very well is good for us and makes us happy. Instead we pick up the remote, turn on cruise control, tune out.

Here's the one I used to blog for. Its also been a while.
